A Story About Doors

Hi sweet friends!

I've been waiting for this day for a while. You see, James and I have been headboard-less since we moved into our apartment. In reality this is not a big deal; however, I've been waiting/working on this headboard for over a year.

I'm getting a little bit a head of myself though. I should start at the beginning.
When James and I choose out outdoor wedding venue there was really only one thing missing:
the big door opening entrance. We immediately started thinking about how to solve this dilemma.

Sis and Micah's wedding venue also happened to be outdoors. So the ideas started forming and we decided if our ceremony sights didn't naturally have doors we would make them ourselves!
Plus they would make perfect headboards for each of us once we were done with them.

Sis, mom, and I spent a weekend searching for the perfect doors: old with character. We finally found 100+ year old pocket doors that would work perfectly with just a little work.
James and I sanded and sanded and sanded.

Mom and Sis painted and stained till the color was just right.
Dad added door handles and built the frame.
Those doors really were a labor of love.

Having doors was important to me because the song I wanted to walk down the aisle reaches a crecendos around 3 minutes {2:45 to be exact}.
The doors opened right then and I got to see James for the first time.
It was totally worth all the sanding!

Our wedding:

For Sis' wedding they "built" an outdoor church complete with old windows, an alter, and the doors.

And finally, no longer doors but the perfect headboards!

  2. That is brilliant! It look's amazing. We're hopefully going to get around to making a fabric headboard sometime soon, we really need one...it makes your bed so much more pulled together!

  4. I love that you took something from your special day and incorporated it into your home! What a great reminder of your special day. For my wedding, our guest book was a giant wooden monogram and all our guest signed it. It is hanging above our bed. I love seeing everyone's sweet messages each night before I go to bed.

  5. I love this idea! It's brilliant to use them as headboards after! Can you talk about how you actual made them working doors for your wedding? Created a door frame and added hinges and door knobs to the door? how did you anchor the structure to the ground to get it to be stable and upright? Thanks so much! and any other tips would be helpful! I want to do this for my wedding in April :)

    1. Hey Becky!
Thanks so much for stopping by! As soon as we picked our wedding venue I knew we wanted doors, so we started working on them immediately. Since we weren't in any sort of hurry (we had 11 months) the whole project (find the doors, painting them, and building) took a few months, but can easily be done quicker if need be.
I wrote a post about the whole process. You can check it out here: http://www.tayloredandturquoise.blogspot.com/2013/11/diy-story-about-doors.html
If you have any other questions about the doors please don't hesitate to contact me, my email address is on my contacts page.
I walked down the aisle to Phil Wickam's "You're Beautiful" :)

  8. This is a great idea. Just a thought would be great to have the scripture above the headboard.
